We ride the boards that we sell.
SUP surfing is progressing very quickly and our recent trip to Hawaii made it very clear that SUP boards have quickly moved away from being 'large mal's'. A lot of boards available right now have been rushed to market and have been shaped by people who dont fully understand that this is a whole new way to ride a board and the old rules are out the window.

The boards we have chosen are ones that we have not only ridden, but would choose too ride ourselves.

The best SUP board package in town.

The OXBOW 11' board (see below) is a light Epoxy board that really 'surfs'

This is our board of choice in the 11' range as it paddles well and really 'surfs' in waves.

SUP board info

There are three 'styles' of stand up paddle boards for cruising, surfing and performance.

Cruising

  • Easy learning, river and ocean cruising
  • 11ft to 12ft in, length, between 28 and 30 inches wide for greater stability
  • Up to 4.5 inches thick for better flotation.
  • Perfect beginner board, or a long distance paddler and great fun on small waves
  • Great for riders over 100kg
The Naish 11'6 board is the perfect entry level cruiser if you plan to do as much paddling as surfing. it is super light, super stabel and makes it easy to catch waves. It suits the heavier paddler wanting all-round performance.

 

Surfing

  • 10ft and 11ft  long, between 27 and 29 inches wide and 3 to 4 inches thick.
  • Suits intermediate to advanced riders wanting to ride waves.
  • Surfs like a longboard.
  • Will handle a rider of up to 100kg and still paddle well.
  • Will be an all round size for riders under 75kg
Currently the SHANE 11' and OXBOW 11' and 10' are the best boards for all round paddleing and surfing

 

Performance

  • This is an emerging part of the sport
  • Boards range from 8'-10'6"
  • The design of these boards is continually evolving to take surfing performance to new levels - WATCH THIS SPACE!

There are 3 types of constructions available with prices ranging from $1295 - $2250.

We stock all three types of boards.

PU foam core with Polyester fibreglass.

 This is the standard surfboard construction. It gives the board a cruisy 'glide'. The board feels more like a standard surfboard and the extra weight helps maintains speed. Local shaper SHANE Steadman is producing some cutting edge designs for the likes of Tom Carroll and Ritchie Lovett. Check out the the latest boards in-store...

EPS (coolite) foam core with Epoxy glass.

This construction type is all about saving weight. When the board is over 10' long, swing weight (whilst turning) is a big issue. By using a lighter core and Epoxy glass the boards can be 20-30% lighter. This makes it lighter, snappier and more responsive. These boards are generally more expensive than 'polyester' boards.
The OXBOW range are Epoxy boards and very reasonable priced from $1295.

EPS (coolite) foam sandwich Epoxy boards.

As above, this construction saves weight. The addition of a high density foam layer over the core increases the durability of these boards. They are the most expensive construction type, if made by hand. If moulded however (and made in Asia) they can be reasonably prices.

The Naish 11'6 is such a board and great for starting out in flat water and working towards riding waves. It retails for $1599
