Paddles This is what makes SUP so different. The paddle not only gets you around and onto the waves earlier, it becomes and extension of your body when surfing and helps to trim and turn the board. Pages have been written about paddle design and construction, but basically you need a paddle that transfers as much power as possible through your stroke but is also forgiving enough to allow you to paddle for hours. Dave Chun's KIALOA paddles are the paddle of choice for BONGA Perkins, Tom Carroll and Blane Chambers of Paddle Surf Hawaii. Get a KIALOA paddle in you hands and you will feel the difference straight away, with it's eliptical shaft and low swing weight a KIALOA paddle is a work of art. As a general guide, add 8-10 inches to your height to determine paddle length. Some surfers prefer to use a paddle that is 1-2 inches shorter in the surf versus flat water. Paddle length is a personal thing but from our experience we recommend that you start out at 10” (25cm) above your height. - You can always shorten it later
- A longer shaft puts less strain on your back (but may aggravate shoulder injuries)
- Most people start out spending more time on flat water, where a longer paddle works best
- As you develop paddle strength and move into the surf you can shorten it
When would you have a shorter paddle (8-9” above your height)? - You are experienced and will spend most of your time in the surf
- You are paddle fit and have the strength to bend more at the waist and take more pressure on your back
- Your arms are shorter than average so you do not have the reach
If you glue the handle on with 5 min epoxy you can ‘crack’ it off later (one person at each end, twisting opposite each other). You can then cut down your shaft and reset the handle. It is recommended that you use FULL STRENGTH epoxy (Araldite) for a more permanent and reliable bond. CUTTING AND SETTING THE HANDLE Mark the cut on the shaft with electrical tape wrapped around the shaft on the paddle side of the cut THE CUT Using a hacksaw cut up right beside the tape As you near the end of the cut make your cut strokes more vertical and reduce the pressure on the blade. Finish the cut using as little force as possible on the saw. This way you avoid the CARBON GLASS tearing. PREPARATION Score the top 1cm of the shaft with 120 grade sand paper or similar Put the foam plug in the top of the shaft (this stops water getting in) The handle is shaped to fit your palm. Check what feels comfortable for you so that when aligned the paddle blade is angled away from you towards the front of the board. Determine what feels most comfortable for you and NOTE this alignment If you are UNSURE about handle laignment - ask us Prepare the epoxy. Be generous but don’t overdo it. It can get messy so be ready to mop up excess resin. Place paddle horizontal, apply resin to top of shaft where you scored it and inside/on handle Place handle on/in top of shaft. Clean up excess resin around handle. It can just be wiped of with a CLEAN rag Use ACETONE/THINNERS if it is really messy Place paddle on the ground or against a will to line handle parallel to blade. DOUBLE CHECK ALIGNMENT Check that the handle is in the right position with the blade angled away from you towards the front of the board Allow 1 hr to cure for 5 min epoxy (Araldite) Overnight for full strength Epoxy (Araldite) GO PLAY – have fun!!
