CHILL

“Chill empowers these young people by including them in a world that they have previously seen as belonging to someone else” says Chill’s Australian Director, Tim Morris. “By putting them on a bus and taking them out of their environment, often for the first time, and giving them everything they need to learn a skill that they never dreamed would be available to them, Chill changes them. Chill gives them a peek at what is possible and provides them with a healthy, new perspective about themselves and their world”.

WHAT DOES CHILL COST?
With the help of our generous sponsors, Chill’s able to provide each young person with everything she/he needs to successfully learn how to snowboard. This includes: bus transportation, lift tickets, accommodation, instruction, and all of the necessary gear (jackets, pants, gloves, hats, boots, bindings, and snowboards). Chill makes all the arrangements and all the young people have to do is want to be there.

HOW YOUNG PEOPLE ARE SELECTED FOR CHILL?
Partnering with Northern Sydney Central Coast Area Drug and Alcohol Services and The Morris Trust, Chill works with young people who may have a multitude of issues: young people in group homes and foster care, young people in alternative schools, young people on probation, young people who have run away and are grappling with problems at home, young people from low-income pockets, young people at-risk for drugs, violence and depression, and young people with emotional and behavioral problems. Partner agencies select their Chill young people based on who they feel can most benefit from the Chill experience based on their professional experience and history with each individual young person. Chill then works with them to help build the skills needed to succeed in life. We establish long-term relationships with these partner agencies so they can use this amazing intervention program as part of what they are doing to try and improve the lives of each of these young people.

“Being part of the Chill program in 2000 was an awesome experience. It was a drug free environment which was a perfect opportunity to meet new people and relate to them on a totally new level. Snowboarding presented us with new challenges both physical and emotional and learning this gave us all a natural high that was to last even when we came back home to Syd. Our drug education sessions were very informative, communicating, causes and effects of drug use. The staff were sensational as was everybody I met.
Hope people in the future will have the same opportunity I did.

Burton Snowboards founded Chill in 1995 as a way for the company to give back and share the sport of snowboarding with young people who would never otherwise have the chance to get out of the city and ride. The benefits of this program to the young people are obvious and immediate so Burton decided to take the necessary steps to expand the program, offering it to more young people in more cities. Chill has touched the lives of over 6,600 troubled young people since its inception.
Jake Burton, founder of Burton Snowboards said “With Chill, we are able to give back to a disadvantaged population in a way that is a natural extension of what we do every day. It just so happens that we are also serving up a lot of fun for these young people in the process”.

Chill will be working with StreetWork Youth Service, The Burdekin Association and Northern Sydney Central Coast Drug and Alcohol Service as these agencies work with young people who have a multiple of issues such as hazardous drug and or alcohol use, low self esteem, family and relationship issues and professional staff to attend the camp.
